Women in Spirits
March is International Women’s History Month! From the very first female master blender in 1997, Joy Spence of Appleton Estate, to Herradura Tequila’s first female master distiller, Maria Teresa Lara, women have been making history as chemists, distillers, founders and owners around the world. In Italy, the Nonino sisters carry on a 125 year-old family tradition of distilling grappa, a grape-based brandy as well as other cordials, including new-to-ABC Nonino L’Aperitivo. Closer to home, Fawn Weaver founded Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey after connecting with the history of Uncle Nearest, a formerly enslaved man who taught Jack Daniel how to distill Tennessee whiskey.
