What is a Barrel Purchase?

A barrel purchase refers to the purchase of the entire contents of a barrel(s).  The purchase does not include the physical barrel, only the bottled contents.  See below for exceptions.

Can I buy a barrel of spirits at ABC?

Yes, Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority allows the purchase of distilled spirits by the barrel.  Please see “How do I buy a barrel” for instructions.

How do I buy a barrel?

Customers must order distilled spirits by the barrel from the manufacturer/distiller to place and process the order.  Our retail stores and our website are not able to take orders for barrel purchases.  A Barrel Purchase Agreement must be printed, signed by all parties, and supplied to ABC.  Visit https://www.abc.virginia.gov/products/limited-availability/barrel-picks for more information.

How do I find out who the manufacturer/distiller is?

We recommend you refer to the manufacturer’s website for contact information.  Please note, not every manufacturer/distiller participates in the barrel purchase program.

How much is it to buy a barrel?

Prices vary, please contact the manufacturer for this information.

When will I receive my order?

The manufacturer will provide an estimated date the order will be shipped to the ABC.

You will be notified by the ABC Store you selected with a definitive delivery date.  Once delivered, the store will email you that the product has arrived at which time you will have two weeks to pay for and pick up all product at one time.

Where do I pick it up?

At the ABC Store you specified when placing your order.

Can someone else pick it up for me?

No. Each individual named on the list submitted by the Group Designee must pick up and pay for their own bottle(s).

How do I pay for it?

 Each individual named on the list submitted by the Group Designee must pay for their own bottle(s). All products must be paid for and picked up within two weeks of delivery.

Do I get the actual barrel from the distillery?

If you are a Licensee, the Code of Virginia prohibits the barrel or barrel lid (tops/caps/ends) from being released to you.  If you are a private citizen, and a barrel and/or lid is provided by the distillery, it will be sent to the store with the product, and you will need to collect it at the same time you pay for and pick up your order.
