A classic brandy cocktail—undoubtedly popularized at a hotel called the Metropolitan. But which one? Also called the “Harvard” cocktail.

In a shaker half-filled with crushed ice, combine all of the ingredients. Shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon wheel.
For a drier cocktail, omit the simple syrup. For a Brandy Manhattan, omit the simple syrup and add 1/2 oz vermouth.
