Add bourbon, syrup and bitters to a mixing glass, then add ice and stir for around 20 seconds. Strain into an old-fashioned glass with a king cube if available, or whatever ice you have. Garnish with an expressed orange peel.
To make an expressed orange peel: Using a Y-shaped vegetable peeler, shave a wide strip of orange skin. Express the oils by pinching the peel over the cocktail, making sure you have the pith side up and the outer peel facing the cocktail. Then place the peel in the cocktail.
