Shake brandy, lemon juice, syrup and bitters with ice. Strain over ice into a glass. Top with sparkling water. Garnish with a lime or lemon slice..
Older versions add egg white to the shaken ingredients. Shake vigorously first without ice, then add ice and shake vigorously again.
