Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC) reaches a milestone this week with the opening of its 400th store. The new store is in Jonesville in southwest Virginia. The Jonesville store is the first Virginia ABC store in Lee County, saving customers a 26-mile trip to Big Stone Gap or a 37-mile trip to Gate City.
“Our 400th store demonstrates our commitment to providing access for all Virginians,” said Virginia ABC Interim Chief Executive Officer Thomas Kirby. “We look forward to serving our customers in Jonesville and the surrounding county.”
Following the passage of the 21st Amendment in 1934, Virginia ABC opened the first four stores selling distilled spirits in Richmond. That number grew to 100 stores by 1941, 200 stores by 1966 and 300 stores by 2004. In recognition of the opening of the 400th store:
• Customers shopping in any Virginia ABC store on Nov. 17 will receive a $4 coupon with any $40 purchase
to be used toward a future purchase of at least $40 by Nov. 30.
• Customers shopping in the Jonesville store will have the opportunity to purchase a special bottle of Old
Elk Bourbon (55.4% ABV) labeled in recognition of the 400th store. This barrel proof bourbon is $79.99
for a 750ml bottle.
“The revenue generated by stores like our new Jonesville location enable ABC to provide the citizens of the Commonwealth with more than what can be found on our shelves,” said Kirby. “These revenues support what help make Virginia the best place to live, work and raise a family – education, public safety, transportation, health care and economic development.”
The Jonesville store measures 3,000 square feet. Store inventory will include more than 1,000 items, including 229 different brands and sizes of American whiskeys, 147 vodkas and 79 tequilas.
Virginia ABC officials will host a grand opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17. The public is invited to the ceremony, which will include brief remarks, a ribbon cutting, photos and informal store tours. The Jonesville store is located at 32505 Wilderness Rd. The store is the farthest west, and the farthest overall from Virginia ABC’s headquarters in Mechanicsville.
Customers are encouraged to visit Virginia ABC’s website at http://www.abc.virginia.gov to search for stores, determine the availability of products at any retail location and order spirits online for in-store or curbside pickup, or home delivery in select areas.
The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC) is a major source of revenue for the commonwealth, contributing nearly $2.9 billion to the general fund in the last five years. Profits from in-store and online retail sales provide funding for designated state programs and services. Virginia ABC currently operates 400 state stores and provides alcohol education and prevention programs for people of all ages. Its Bureau of Law Enforcement oversees nearly 21,000 ABC licensed establishments. Now marking its 89th year, ABC remains committed to progress and innovation in carrying out its vision of bringing good spirits and excellent service to Virginia.
