The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority is seeking an experienced attorney with exceptional analytical, organizational, and oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple complex and ongoing matters in the area of labor and employment law. This position will provide legal counsel and representation to the Authority through reviewing policies and procedures, collaborating with Human Resources, interpreting, and applying federal and state laws and regulations while taking into account the overall mission and values of Virginia ABC.

The Labor & Employment Attorney will represent Virginia ABC in administrative hearings before regulatory agencies (i.e. Virginia Employment Commission or U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), Circuit Court matters, and in responding to inquiries and complaints. This position will provide interpretation and guidance on laws, rulings, regulations, and compliance to the various business units within Virginia ABC. Other responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:

  • Advises Authority Staff, HR and Executives on a variety of employment and labor related legal compliance matters.
  • Provides interpretation and guidance on laws, rulings, regulations, and compliance for various employment related issues.
  • Assists the HR Department by providing legal counsel on issues involving but not limited to workplace safety, disability, employee leave, workplace harassment, discrimination, wrongful termination, FLSA, employment and labor law, including but not limited to state and federal anti-discrimination laws, labor laws, and pay equity matters.
  • Represent Virginia ABC in administrative hearings before regulatory agencies (i.e. Virginia Employment Commission or U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), Circuit Court matters, and in responding to inquiries and complaints.


Minimum Qualifications

  • A Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school is required.
  • Be an active member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar or possess the ability to waive into membership with the Virginia State Bar through reciprocity as a member of a state bar.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4-6 years litigation experience (or equivalent experience) in a mid-size to large firm with a primary focus on employment counseling, litigation, state and federal anti-discrimination laws, labor laws, leave laws, pay equity matters, and wrongful termination.
  • Preferred experience in the areas of administrative law, constitutional law, or workmen’s compensation claims.
  • Experience as the lead or solo attorney in complex litigation matters.
