This recipe serves 6.
Heat the wine and port in a large saucepan over medium-high heat until just boiling (7-8 minutes). Stir in the sugar until dissolved and remove from the heat. Tie the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves and orange rind in a piece of cheesecloth and add to the hot liquid. Add raisins and almonds (if using). Cover and steep for 20 minutes to 1 hour. Remove and discard the spice bundle. Ladle into mugs and serve hot.
