Types of Banquet Licenses

Banquet

This license is issued to individuals (representing themselves or a group/company) for private events where alcohol is provided at no charge to guests. Also known as a “one-day” license.

Authorizes complimentary beer, wine or mixed beverages; guests may bring their own alcohol; or beer and/or wine sales (not for profit).

Banquet Special Event

This license is issued to duly organized nonprofit corporations or associations that are holding a public or private event being conducted for an athletic, charitable, civic, educational, political or religious purpose. The event must not be for personal monetary gain.

Authorizes beer and/or wine sales for on-premises consumption, or guests may bring their own alcohol. Does not authorize the sale of mixed beverages.

Banquet Special Event (allowing wine off-premises sales)

This license is issued to duly organized nonprofit corporations or associations that are holding a public or private event being conducted for an athletic, charitable, civic, educational, political or religious purpose. It authorizes beer and/or wine sales for on-premises consumption, or guests may bring their own alcohol. Does not authorize the sale of mixed beverages. The event must not be for personal monetary gain.

Authorizes the sale of wine, as part of any fundraising activity, in closed containers for off-premises consumption to persons to whom wine may be lawfully sold. Off-premise sale of wine is limited to no more than one such fundraiser per year. Wine off sales must be in closed containers.

Authorizes beer, wine and mixed beverage sales for on-premises consumption, or guests may bring their own alcohol. Mixed Beverage Club Event

This license is issued to a private club that already holds a beer, or wine and beer club license in order to sell and serve mixed beverages on premises in approved areas to members and guests. It may be granted up to 12 times per calendar year. A separate license is required for each day of each club event.

Authorizes on-premises sale and consumption of mixed beverages by club members or guests in approved areas on the club premises.

Manufacturer’s Beer/Wine Event

For manufacturers of beer or wine for craft beer or wine festivals. May be granted up to eight times per calendar year for an event lasting for 1 to 3 consecutive days. Events held for more than three days require another application.

Authorizes the sale or complimentary samples of beer or wine.

Manufacturer’s Distilled Spirits Event

For a manufacturer of distilled spirits for distilled spirits educational events. May be granted up to four times per calendar year for an event lasting for 1 to 3 consecutive days. Events held for more than three days require another application.

Authorizes complimentary samples of spirits in designated areas. No single sample shall exceed one-half ounce per spirits product, unless served as a mixed beverage, in which case a single sample may contain up to one-and-one-half ounces of spirits. No more than three ounces of spirits may be offered to any patron.

Tasting

This license is issued to a business or an individual who is not prohibited from holding an ABC license and wishes to sell or give samples for the purpose of educating the consuming public about the alcoholic beverages being tasted. May be granted up to four times per year.

Authorizes the sale or complimentary samples of beer, wine and/or mixed beverages in approved localities. Restrictions apply on amounts and types of alcohol (§4.1-221.1).
