New Store Opens in Alexandria

Residents of northern Alexandria have a new retail outlet for purchasing wine and spirits. The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) recently opened a store at 3815-3817 Mount Vernon Ave. in the Del Ray North Shopping Center.

On Thursday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m., the public is invited to a grand opening event hosted in the store. The celebration will include brief remarks, a ribbon cutting, photos and informal store tours. Light refreshments will follow at 11:30 a.m. The first 25 customers will receive a complimentary gift.

“We are excited to enhance convenience for our customers in Northern Virginia by providing an additional location to find a variety of spirits and Virginia wines in the Del Ray neighborhood,” said Virginia ABC Chairman Jeffrey Painter.

The 4,147-square-foot space is 65 percent retail space and is approximately 1,000 square feet larger than the average Virginia ABC store. The store currently stocks 1,652 items and employs seven people. Regular store hours will be 10 a.m. − 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 − 6 p.m. Sunday.

“This new location is a great opportunity to better serve residents of this growing community,” said Wilson Jones, Director of Retail Operations. “As we learn more about our customers in the area, the store manager will adjust inventory to fit their unique needs.”

This is Virginia ABC’s 370th store. The agency has opened more than 80 stores in the last ten years and plans to open additional stores strategically located to meet market demands and better serve the people of the commonwealth. Currently, 92 percent of Virginians live within 10 minutes of an ABC store.

The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is a major source of revenue for the commonwealth, contributing more than $1.9 billion to the general fund in the last five years. The agency currently operates 370 state stores. Its Bureau of Law Enforcement oversees more than 17,000 ABC licensed establishments while the Hearings and Appeals Division considers more than 700 cases each year. The agency also provides alcohol education and prevention programs for people of all ages. Now marking its 84th year, ABC remains committed to progress and innovation in carrying out its control, service and revenue mission.
