Virginia ABC and Virginia Tourism Team Up to Offer Vacation Sweepstakes

Starting today, four lucky lovers of Virginia’s mountains, wine or food—and wonderful escapes that feature these popular draws—may soon be packing their bags for a free trip of a lifetime. The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and the Virginia Tourism Corporation are co-sponsoring a Virginia Vacation Sweepstakes, which offers a grand prize winner the chance to choose from one of three Virginia vacation packages for three days and two nights for up to four people. Vacation packages valued at $2,000 each include:

  • Virginia is for Mountain Lovers—A stay at Primland Resort in Patrick County to include a spa treatment, dinner and the choice of three activities including fly fishing, golf and horseback riding, to name a few.
  • Virginia is for Wine Lovers—A stay at Salamander Resort in Middleburg to include a spa treatment; an activity choice of horseback riding, tennis lesson, cooking, zip-lining or golf; dinners and winery tours.
  • Virginia is for Food Lovers—A stay at Richmond’s Quirk Hotel to include dinners, art gallery tours, local brewery tours and a “Real Richmond Food Tour” with a choice for dinner at one of four of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants.

The sweepstakes, which is part of Virginia ABC’s “Make Spirits Bright” holiday campaign, will also offer 20 runners-up prizes of $100 Virginia ABC gift cards. Entries will be accepted in Virginia ABC stores through Dec. 5.

Virginia ABC has previously teamed with Virginia Tourism. Earlier this year, Virginia ABC store personnel received uniform polo shirts bearing the Virginia ABC and Tourism logos, and ABC’s four premier stores began offering Virginia is for Lovers merchandise. In 2015, a summer partnership between the two agencies offering Virginia is for Lovers trucker hats with every purchase of Virginia wine and spirits at select stores resulted in an almost 116 percent increase in sales of Virginia-made products. When the UCI Road World Championships bicycle races came to Richmond in September, 2015, 35 metro-area ABC stores offered a free Virginia is for Lovers cowbell—the noisemaker of choice for professional cycling events—with purchase of a 750mL or larger bottle of Virginia-made wine or craft spirit.

"Virginia ABC is proud to once again partner with Virginia Tourism for this exciting sweepstakes opportunity," said Virginia ABC Chairman Jeffrey Painter.  “It is a great way to connect consumers to travel in Virginia and showcase the commonwealth’s outstanding beauty and its fine spirits, wine and food.”

“The holidays are a fantastic time to highlight a signature Virginia travel experience,” said Rita McClenny, president and CEO of Virginia Tourism Corporation. “It’s also a wonderful time to showcase Virginia spirits and wine, as Virginians entertain friends and family traveling to the Commonwealth from across the country and the world. We are so delighted to partner with Virginia ABC once again at this special time of year.”

No purchase is necessary to enter the sweepstakes, which is open to legal residents of Virginia who are 21 years of age or older. Winners will be chosen randomly from entries received in Virginia ABC stores and will be notified by Jan. 15, 2017.

Virginia ABC employees and immediate family members are not eligible.

The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is a major source of revenue for the commonwealth, contributing more than $1.9 billion to the general fund in the last five years. The agency currently operates 363 state stores. Its Bureau of Law Enforcement oversees more than 17,000 ABC licensed establishments while the Hearings and Appeals Division considers more than 700 cases each year. The agency also provides alcohol education and prevention programs for people of all ages. Now marking its 83rd year, ABC remains committed to progress and innovation in carrying out its control, service and revenue mission.

The Virginia Tourism Corporation is the state agency responsible for marketing Virginia to visitors and promoting the 47-year old Virginia is for Lovers brand. Virginia is for Lovers is the longest-running state tourism slogan in the country. Virginia is for Lovers stands for love, pure and simple, and promotes the state as the ideal destination for loved ones to completely connect on a great vacation. Virginia is for Lovers was named one of the top 10 tourism marketing campaigns of all time by Forbes and was inducted into the National Advertising Walk of Fame in 2009.
