Nestled in the New River Valley in Virginia’s western reaches, Blacksburg has seen its population rise in recent years. To better serve its growing number of residents and visitors traveling along the Interstate 81 corridor, the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has opened a second retail outlet in the city. The new store is located at 765 University City Blvd. in University Mall.
The public is invited to a grand opening event at noon on Monday, Oct. 31. Virginia Deputy Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Victoria Cochran will join Virginia ABC Chairman Jeffrey Painter and special guests at this celebration, which will include brief remarks, a ribbon cutting, photos and informal store tours. Refreshments will follow at 12:30 p.m.
“We’re excited to provide another retail location in this emerging metropolitan area as an added convenience for the growing population and business base,” said Painter.
Blacksburg, together with its neighbors Christiansburg and Radford, was recently ranked in the country’s top ten “Best Emerging Places to Live” and top 20 “Most Secure Places to Live” by BestPlaces.net, which noted the city’s population increase and low unemployment rate.
“Virginia ABC strategically chose the location to meet market demands and better serve our Blacksburg customers,” said Wilson Jones, director of retail operations.
The new 2,742-square-foot retail outlet offers approximately 1,314 items and employs four people. Store hours will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
“We're thrilled to have a second store in this growing southwestern Virginia city and are eager to welcome customers, answer their questions and fulfill special requests,” said Jones. “As we get to know customers in this area we will adjust the store’s product mix to accommodate their tastes.” The first 25 customers at the grand opening will receive a gift.
Virginia ABC operates 361 stores in the commonwealth. A searchable list of these stores—including brands and quantities of spirits available at each location—can be found on the agency’s website (www.abc.virginia.gov). Customers may also order select spirits online for delivery to the store of their choice.
The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is a major source of revenue for the commonwealth, contributing more than $1.8 billion to the general fund in the last five years. The agency currently operates 361 state stores. Its Bureau of Law Enforcement oversees more than 17,000 ABC licensed establishments while the Hearings and Appeals Division considers more than 700 cases each year. The agency also provides alcohol education and prevention programs for people of all ages. Now marking its 83rd year, ABC remains committed to progress and innovation in carrying out its control, service and revenue mission.
