Customers purchasing distilled spirits in Winchester have traveled to the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) store located at 2218 Valley Ave. since the retail outlet opened in 1960. Starting at the end of this month, shoppers will make purchases at the new Virginia ABC store at 3 W. Jubal Early Drive, less than two miles away.
The Valley Avenue ABC location—one of four in Winchester—will close at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, and reopen in the new space at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
“The move is small in distance, but it will have a big impact on the visibility of the store and the customer experience,” said Director of Retail Operations Wilson Jones. “Moving into a shopping center across the street from popular retail businesses and many new developments will provide much greater exposure for the store. In addition, it gives us the chance to completely modernize the space with new countertops, fixtures, flooring, paint and an enhanced layout.
The new Winchester store will feature nearly 800 square feet of additional space on the sales floor allowing for more displays and promotions. The location change will not affect the vast product selection. With 1,431 items to choose from, customers will be able to find the distilled spirits, mixers and Virginia wines they currently enjoy.
“We expect Winchester residents to respond very positively to having an updated Virginia ABC location in their area,” said Jones. “It will make the shopping experience enjoyable for both long-time customers and patrons who haven’t previously explored the impressive selection of products at this store.”
During the three-day closure, customers can shop at nearby Winchester ABC stores located at 160 Rivendell Court and 182 Delco Plaza. When it reopens, operating hours will remain the same: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. A searchable list of Virginia ABC’s 361 stores—including brands and quantities of spirits available at each location—can be found on the agency’s website (www.abc.virginia.gov).
The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is a major source of revenue for the commonwealth, contributing more than $1.8 billion to the general fund in the last five years. The agency currently operates 361 state stores. Its Bureau of Law Enforcement oversees more than 17,000 ABC licensed establishments while the Hearings and Appeals Division considers more than 700 cases each year. The agency also provides alcohol education and prevention programs for people of all ages. Now marking its 83rd year, ABC remains committed to progress and innovation in carrying out its control, service and revenue mission.
