After traveling to nearby Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) stores to purchase distilled spirits, Amelia shoppers were pleased when their newly remodeled store at 15127 Patrick Henry Highway reopened on Saturday, and with expanded operating hours.
To accommodate the rise in customers, the Village Square Shopping Center store was renovated to increase its size from 1,200 to 1,800 square feet. The work included new flooring, paint, ceiling tiles, lighting and counters. Operating hours at the retail outlet were also expanded by an hour on Friday and Saturday evenings allowing patrons to shop until 7 p.m.
“Amelia residents will be thrilled with the modernized store,”said Director of Retail Operations Wilson Jones. “The inviting atmosphere, as well as the longer hours on two busy nights, will make the shopping experience enjoyable for both long-time customers and patrons who haven’t previously explored our selection of products.”
A new layout nearly doubled the sales floor allowing the store to increase its selection of products to more than 550 distilled spirits and mixers, including many that are made in Virginia. The largest spirit category is bourbon with 129 options available, including 20 of the top-selling statewide bourbons that the store was not carrying prior to the remodel.
Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
“After a quarter of a century with the same layout and features, the Amelia store was due for a complete overhaul,” said Chairman Jeffrey Painter. “If the reopening this weekend is an indication of sales at the expanded store, customers will respond very positively to having an updated Virginia ABC location in their area.”
The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is a major source of revenue for the commonwealth, contributing more than $1.8 billion to the general fund in the last five years. The agency currently operates 360 state stores. Its Bureau of Law Enforcement oversees more than 17,000 ABC licensed establishments while the Hearings and Appeals Division considers more than 700 cases each year. The agency also provides alcohol education and prevention programs for people of all ages. Now marking its 83rd year, ABC remains committed to progress and innovation in carrying out its control, service and revenue mission.
