Yorktown Gets New Virginia ABC Store

Yorktown residents and out-of-town visitors alike will find it easier to shop for spirits with the opening of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control’s (ABC) newest store, located at 201 Tradesman Way. This latest retail outlet, part of the new multi-use development called Nelson’s Grant, brings the number of Virginia ABC stores in the state to 359.

To celebrate, Virginia ABC will host a grand opening ceremony at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 3. Citizens are invited to join Virginia ABC Chairman Jeffrey Painter and special guests at the event, which will include brief remarks, a ribbon cutting, photos and informal store tours followed by refreshments. The first 25 customers will receive a free gift.

“Residents are clearly happy with this store’s arrival,” said Chairman Painter. “In fact, numbers show that they have already responded very positively—each day during the first week the store was open it nearly doubled its business. I’m confident that being on a main thoroughfare in an area that is experiencing great growth will be a good fit.”

The store is the fourth Virginia ABC store to open in 2016. It is the third location in Yorktown and one of five in York County. The 2,664-square-foot location will offer more than 1,000 products, including 216 bourbon items, 234 vodka items and a wide selection of Virginia-made wine and spirits. As shoppers make purchases and express their preferences, the manager will refine and customize the store’s product mix to accommodate customer favorites.

The store, which has five employees to assist customers with all their shopping needs, will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

“Virginia ABC is excited about expanding our retail presence in York County,” Painter added. “We are always seeking new locations to make our extensive product selection available for Virginia shoppers. This beautiful free-standing location will also serve travelers who are visiting the attractions in the Yorktown area, such as the battlefield and riverwalk, and allow them to explore our Virginia spirit offerings as well."

A searchable list of Virginia ABC’s 359 stores—including brands and quantities of spirits available at each location—can be found on the agency’s website (www.abc.virginia.gov). Customers may also order select spirits online for delivery to the store of their choice.

The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is a major source of revenue for the commonwealth, contributing more than $1.8 billion to the general fund in the last five years. The agency currently operates 359 state stores. Its Bureau of Law Enforcement oversees more than 17,000 ABC licensed establishments while the Hearings and Appeals Division considers more than 700 cases each year. The agency also provides alcohol education and prevention programs for people of all ages. Now marking its 82nd year, ABC remains committed to progress and innovation in carrying out its control, service and revenue mission.
