Continuing its trend of opening stores featuring customized designs and innovative layouts, the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is showcasing its latest retail outlet at a grand opening event in Fairfax on Friday, Oct. 30.
The public is invited to join Virginia ABC Chairman Jeffrey Painter and staff at 11 a.m. for a ceremony consisting of brief remarks, a ribbon cutting, informal store tours and refreshments. The first 25 customers who make a purchase on Oct. 30 will receive a free non-alcoholic gift.
The event will take place at the newly relocated store in the Pender Village Shopping Center at 3903 Fair Ridge Drive. The store recently moved from 13053 E. Lee Jackson Highway to the new 2,758-square-foot location.
The retail outlet—one of 40 in Fairfax and part of Virginia ABC’s 353-store network—features a one-of-a-kind design. The former tenant, a bridal boutique, created a dramatic space featuring white spheres against a black backdrop. Virginia ABC’s property management and retail staff worked together to complement the existing interior by adding chandeliers, black shelving and under-shelf lighting to showcase products.
“We took advantage of a great design and made it work for our purposes,” said Painter. “As a 21st century retailer, Virginia ABC has the ability and flexibility to be creative in the way we approach retail initiatives and respond to customer needs.”
The new Pender Village location offers a more upscale environment and pleasing shopping experience. In addition to carrying more than 1,230 distilled spirits, Virginia wines and mixers, the store will offer an expanded selection of high-end bourbons. The store is also in a more prominent space on the main highway, providing better visibility and easier access. The move will not affect the location’s operating hours, which are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
“This unique and enhanced design is not only visually appealing, it also encourages customers to discover products they might not have known about without forsaking the ease of identifying favorite brands they have come to expect in Virginia ABC stores,” Painter said. “With the exception of our high level of customer service and consistently wide selection of products, patrons in this store will recognize little resembling their usual ABC shopping experience.”
Virginia ABC has opened 81 stores in the last 10 years and has plans to open additional stores based on market research, customer demand and available locations. Customers may use Virginia ABC’s newly updated website (www.abc.virginia.gov) to search for stores, determine the availability of products at any of its retail locations and order distilled spirits online for delivery to a local store.
The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is a major source of revenue for the commonwealth, contributing more than $1.8 billion to the general fund in the last five years. The agency currently operates 353 state stores. Its Bureau of Law Enforcement oversees more than 16,000 ABC licensed establishments while the Hearings and Appeals Division considers more than 700 cases each year. The agency also provides alcohol education and prevention programs for people of all ages. ABC is committed to progress and innovation in carrying out its control, service and revenue mission.
