Tim Smith’s Climax Moonshine has reached new heights among whiskey lovers in Virginia. Now fans of the spirit and its maker, who gained notoriety and fame on the Discovery Channel’s “Moonshiners” TV show, can meet Smith and get a signed bottle of Climax Moonshine at three Virginia ABC store appearances beginning Wednesday, April 1.
Smith will greet fans and sign bottles of his namesake spirits from 3 to 6 p.m. on the following dates and Virginia ABC store locations:
April 1: Williamsburg: Williamsburg Shopping Center at 1244 Richmond Road;
April 2: Richmond area: The Village at Swift Creek, 13113 and 13117 Rittenhouse Drive, Midlothian;
April 3: Culpeper: 185 Southgate Shopping Center.
The ABC premier store in Williamsburg is an ideal spot to launch the Virginia bottle-signing tour. This location, one of three premier stores ABC opened in 2014, pays homage to the early days of distilled spirits with a reproduction vintage moonshine still on display.
Virginia ABC started listing Tim Smith’s Climax Moonshine Original among its product offerings in July 2014. That same year, the Huffington Post named Smith’s product No. 1 in a taste test of legal moonshine. The original Climax Moonshine sells for $34.90 for the standard 750 ml bottle.
While many people associate the term “moonshine” with illegal production, in recent years legal moonshine has found a new following among mainstream whiskey connoisseurs. Small distilleries are proliferating in Virginia and other nearby states known for distilled spirits. Virginia is home to 28 distilleries. These artisan distillers are producing often award-winning small batch bourbons, organic whiskies and even gluten-free vodkas.
Virginia ABC carries many Virginia-made distilled spirits. Customers should search the agency’s online catalog at www.abc.virginia.gov for their favorite product or contact their local store.
