The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) announces the opening of its new Harrisonburg store located at 1037 Port Republic Road in a 2,400-square-foot space formerly occupied by Vito’s Italian Kitchen, near the Food Lion grocery store.
A grand opening event is planned for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Virginia ABC Commissioners and special guests will attend this celebration, which will include brief remarks, a ribbon cutting, photos and informal store tours. Refreshments will follow at 11:30 a.m. In recognition of the agency’s 80th anniversary, the first 80 customers will receive a (non-alcoholic) parting gift.
“We’re excited to provide a fourth retail location in Harrisonburg as an added convenience for the growing population and business base,” said Shenandoah Valley native and ABC Chairman Jeff Painter.
Virginia ABC strategically chose the Port Republic Road location to meet market demands and better serve the growing population in Harrisonburg,” said Wilson Jones, director of retail operations.
The nearest ABC store is located at 2035 E. Market Street in Harrisonburg’s Skyline Village Shopping Center.
The store carries approximately 1,948 items and employs seven people. Store hours will be 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1–6 p.m. Sunday.
“We're eager to welcome customers, answer their questions and fulfill special requests,” said Jones. “As we get to know customers in this area we will adjust the store’s product mix to accommodate their tastes.”
Virginia ABC operates 351 stores in the commonwealth. The agency has opened 80 stores in the last 10 years and has plans to open additional stores based on market research, customer demand and available locations. Currently 98 percent of Virginia’s population resides within 10 minutes of an ABC store.
The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is a major source of revenue for the commonwealth, contributing more than $1.8 billion to the general fund in the last five years. The agency currently operates 351 state stores. Its Bureau of Law Enforcement oversees more than 16,000 ABC licensed establishments while the Hearings and Appeals Division considers more than 700 cases each year. The agency also provides alcohol education and prevention programs for people of all ages. Now celebrating its 80th anniversary, ABC remains committed to progress and innovation in carrying out its control, service and revenue mission.
