80th Anniversary Gift Card Drawing Held at Virginia ABC

  • Virginia ABC celebrates its 80th anniversary with a drawing for 80 people to each win an $80 gift card
  • More than 20,000 shoppers entered the 80th anniversary gift card drawing on Black Friday

Virginia ABC Commissioners Judy Napier and Henry Marsh took turns reaching deep into a charred oak barrel that once held bourbon to pull out 80 entries in the agency’s 80th anniversary gift card drawing yesterday.

On Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, shoppers in Virginia ABC stores around the state were invited to fill out entry forms for the drawing to win one of the $80 ABC gift cards. The one-day special drawing netted 20,281 entries from which the commissioners drew randomly. The gift cards will be mailed to the winners.

“This was a unique way for our customers to join in our 80th anniversary celebration,” said Commissioner Napier. “We are very excited to be able to tell 80 folks around the state that they’ve won!”

This year, Black Friday sales in Virginia ABC stores totaled $5,603,301, an 11.8 percent increase over those of last year’s Black Friday sale. This was the fourth year the agency has offered a Black Friday discount on purchases of $50 or more and the first time Virginia ABC offered the gift card giveaway.

The 80 winners include Virginians from as far west as Tazewell County to Cape Charles on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, as well as four out-of-state winners from Ohio, New Jersey and two from North Carolina.

“ABC encourages Virginians to drink responsibly. As the holiday season approaches, we should be especially mindful of celebrating safely,” Napier said.

The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is a major source of revenue for the commonwealth, contributing more than $1.8 billion to the general fund in the last five years. The agency currently operates 350 state stores. Its Bureau of Law Enforcement oversees more than 16,000 ABC licensed establishments while the Hearings and Appeals Division considers more than 700 cases each year. The agency also provides alcohol education and prevention programs for people of all ages. Now celebrating its 80th anniversary, ABC remains committed to progress and innovation in carrying out its control, service and revenue mission.
