ABC Agents Nab Two Men Sunday Morning for Illegal Transport of Moonshine Across State Line

  • Collaborative effort between ABC’s Special Operations unit, Southside Drug and Gang Task Force unit and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
  • 150 gallons of untaxed distilled spirits, cash and two vehicles seized.

Two men were arrested Sunday morning by special agents with the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) for transporting untaxed moonshine across the Virginia state line.

Vernon Thomas, 76, of Chesterfield, and Bernard Davis, 64, of Chase City, were nabbed in Mecklenburg County in separate takedowns. Thomas was caught on Interstate 85 at the intersection of Route 58 in South Hill. Davis was arrested on Route 58 in Boydton.

Agents seized 150 gallons of untaxed distilled spirits, $510 in U.S. currency, a Chevrolet truck and Chevrolet cargo van. The operation was a result of a three-month investigation.

The men were charged with illegally transporting alcoholic beverages and possession of untaxed distilled spirits. Each charge is a class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to 12 months in jail, a fine of up to $2500, either or both.

The operation was a joint effort of the Virginia ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement, the Southside Drug and Gang Task Force (Boydton) and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

A court date will soon follow.
