ABC Recognizes Staunton Store as Extraordinary

  • ABC store at 1028 Richmond Ave. earns recognition for an outstanding performance in 2012
  • Rigorous Rewards and Recognition audit program has 124 requirements

The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has recognized its store at 1028 Richmond Ave. in Staunton for an extraordinary audit. This distinction is part of the agency’s Rewards and Recognition program to highlight exceptional reviews for performance and enhance ABC’s internal control environment in retail operations.

As part of the auditing process, stores are rigorously evaluated using 124 measures including issues such as safe/lockbox security, deposits, cash handling procedures, compliance to operating procedures, employee shortage records, inventory control, and IT/systems security.

John Wszelaki, internal audit director, explained that the audit program is designed to ensure the retail stores are in compliance with written wholesale/retail procedures, which are often revised monthly. The program also has measures in place to identify and detect where potential fraud may be occurring.

Prior to 2011 ABC conducted store audits every two years. During the past couple of years its auditors have strived to conduct reviews annually. ABC auditors completed 304 reviews in Fiscal Year 2012. The agency currently operates 339 stores in the state.

“Since the Rewards and Recognition program’s introduction in the fall of 2010, we have seen a marked improvement in store audits as more stores work to achieve this prized recognition,” said Wilson Jones, director of ABC’s Wholesale/Retail Operations.

The Staunton store was one of 79 stores, representing 26 percent of ABC’s retail outlets in Virginia, to earn recognition as extraordinary in 2012. That is a 15 percent increase over the previous year when 46 stores earned recognition. Wszelaki said the store audit program has been shared with regional managers to provide stores guidelines for compliant reviews.
