“Congratulations to J. Craig Vanderland, Chief Financial Officer of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) for being named 2012 CFO of the Year by Virginia Business,” said Governor Bob McDonnell. “The current business and economic environment calls for leaders capable of collaborating and creative problem-solving while continuing to inspire those who work with them. Mr. Vanderland has exemplified these skills in providing enhanced direction and internal controls to a $700 million retail and law enforcement agency while guiding the agency forward strategically. The Commonwealth is fortunate to have such a leader on our state government team.”
“We are extremely proud and honored to have such a talented CFO leading our agency,” said ABC Chairman Neal Insley. “Not only does Craig make extraordinary daily contributions in his role as CFO, but he also willingly shares his time and expertise with others throughout the agency.”
Vanderland has worked for ABC for nearly three decades and has been CFO since 2005. Under his leadership, Virginia ABC has been credited with operating one of the most modern, efficient and profitable state-operated liquor systems in the nation. With gross sales of nearly $700 million in fiscal year 2011, ABC marked its 13th consecutive record-breaking year for sales and profit transfers. Last year, the agency sent more than $339 million in total contributions to Virginia’s General Fund, and has contributed more than $1.5 billion to the General Fund in the last five years.
In addition to CFO responsibilities, Vanderland has spearheaded best practice solutions at ABC, and has been instrumental in improving the agency’s leadership and training programs.
Vanderland holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Virginia Tech, and an MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University.
