ABC Special Agents File Multiple Charges With Local Exxon Station Stemming From Underage Alcohol Sales
Special Agents from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control's (ABC) Staunton Regional Enforcement Office issued 13 summonses yesterday evening at the University Exxon located at 1735 Reservoir Street in Harrisonburg. The clerk of the store was charged with violation of Virginia code 4.1-304, sale of alcoholic beverage to person less than 21 years of age; two customers were charged with violation of Virginia code 4.1-305, purchase of alcoholic beverages under the age of 21; and 10 persons were charged with violation of Virginia code 4.1-323, attempting to purchase alcoholic beverages under the age of 21.
On Thursday, February 8, ABC special agents arrived at the Exxon at approximately 6:40 p.m. to follow up on information and investigate the establishment for sales of alcohol to persons less than 21. The agents witnessed the clerk selling alcohol to two underage persons. At approximately 8:30 p.m., the owner decided to close down the store.
"We want licensees and students to be aware of the legal penalties they could face for breaking underage drinking laws," said Special Agent in Charge of the ABC Staunton Region Roger Stevens. "We want incidents like this one to serve as a reminder of the seriousness of selling to underage persons and purchasing alcohol under the legal age."
The investigation is ongoing with pending administrative charges against the ABC license of the University Exxon. Criminal and administrative charges can result from the sale of alcoholic beverages to underage persons.
The ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement is committed to providing effective public safety by enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth. Prevention of youth access to alcohol is a primary component of the agency mission.
