RICHMOND – An out-of-the way dirt road in Suffolk saw heavier than normal traffic today when special agents with Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (Virginia ABC) arrested a North Carolina man on charges related to moonshine.

The arrest on Old South Quay Road is the result of a three-month, joint investigation by Virginia ABC and North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement. The Suffolk Police Department assisted in the arrest.

Claude L. Parker, 59, a resident of Hudson Park Lane in Gates County, NC, was charged with four counts for the sale of untaxed liquor, four counts for the possession of untaxed liquor and three counts for the transportation of more than three gallons of liquor across the state line.

All charges are class one misdemeanors punishable with 12 months in jail, a $2500 fine or both, per charge.

“The undercover investigation began three months ago based on complaints of someone was selling illegal liquor to residents,” said Robert M. Brooks, Special Agent in Charge of ABC’s Hampton Regional Office.

“ABC undercover operatives purchased moonshine from Parker on several occasions leading up to the arrest,” he said. “The moonshine sold for $55 per gallon.”

Agents seized 24 gallons of moonshine and the 1990 Chevy pickup truck Parker was driving.

SAC Brooks said he doesn’t believe Parker manufactured the moonshine. An investigation on the source is continuing.

After being charged, Parker was released on his personal recognizance for a later appearance in Suffolk General District Court.
