ABC special agents are sworn officers with full law enforcement authority. Agents receive training, life insurance, health insurance, sick leave, paid vacation, and earn retirement in Virginia Law Officers' Retirement System (VaLORS).
Job Description
Duties of the ABC special agent include but are not limited to:
- conducting background investigations to determine the suitability of licensee applicants
- inspecting ABC-licensed establishments throughout the year to ensure compliance; investigating businesses related to falsification of records, skimming, or money laundering
- investigating, in conjunction with ABC matters, illicit drug use or distribution and gambling activities
- conducting surveillance of licensed and unlicensed establishments to curb illegal activities including sales to underage or intoxicated persons
- ensuring public safety and health
- and ensuring the collection of tax dollars
Qualification Requirements
The minimum qualifications for ABC special agents are:
- must be at least 21 years of age on date of hire
- must be a high school graduate or have a GED (college and/or related experience preferred)
- must be of good character and reputation as established by a background investigation to include but not limited to: polygraph examination, prior work experience, character and reputation, credit history and police record
- must be able to successfully pass a medical examination including psychological evaluation
- must be in possession of a valid driver's license and a good driving record
- must be willing to work rotating shifts and weekends. Must also be willing to travel when necessary to assist with investigations, attend training, etc.
- must establish residence within assigned geographic region
Training Procedures
Candidates hired as special agents must:
- successfully complete a certified full-time police academy or possess the ability to complete a certified full-time police academy at the time of appointment
- successfully complete a probationary period
